Romantic Comedy Movies

Romantic comedy movies are often known by the abbreviations romcoms or rom coms. But no matter what you call them, you can count of the plot centering around a guy and girl who meet, fall in love, and then encounter some manner of relationship-threatening difficulty. In most cases, they wind up together in the end, but you will find the rare romantic comedy movie where the guy doesn’t get the girl.

The following article lists some of my favorite romantic comedy movies produced over the years. Since I’m a guy, I don’t rush out to see everything starring Jennifer Lopez or one of the Sex and the City gals, so I’m hoping this list will provide some alternatives not normally encountered on your average trip to Netflix or the local video store.

The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) – Mia Farrow plays a lonely New Jersey housewife living through the Great Depression. To pass the time and escape from her tedious existence, she goes to the movies regularly. Imagine her surprise when a hunky on-screen character (Jeff Daniels) breaks the fourth wall and starts speaking directly to her.

Intolerable Cruelty (2003) – The Coen brothers try their hand at making a screwball comedy in this film starring George Clooney as a cynical divorce attorney and Catherine Zeta-Jones as a money-hungry divorcee. Sparks fly, and the supporting cast includes Geoffrey Rush, Billy Bob Thornton, and Cedric the Entertainer.

Milk Money (1994) – Melanie Griffith stars as a prostitute named “V” who gives three pre-teen boys a ride home and ends up hiding out in a tree house. There’s an immediate attraction between the kind-hearted V and a widower science teacher (Ed Harris), but they’ll have to overcome her rather unfriendly pimp (Casey Siemaszko) before true love can win out.

Ball of Fire (1941) – A group of professors (including Gary Cooper) live in isolation while compiling an encyclopedia of all human knowledge. Due to a freak set of circumstances, they end up taking in a burlesque performer named “Sugarpuss” O’Shea (Barbara Stanwyck), and she teaches them all a few new tricks. Meanwhile, she’s being pursued by her mobster boyfriend.

Kissing Jessica Stein (2001) – Fed up with heterosexual relationships that go nowhere, a Jewish copyeditor named Jessica Stein (Jennifer Westfeldt) replies to a personal ad placed by a bisexual art gallery owner (Heather Juergensen). As their relationship deepens, they face a number of challenges, including Jessica’s reluctance to reveal her relationship to her family.

One Fine Day (1996) – Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney star as single parents who are late to drop their kids off for a school field trip. Both have hectic schedules planned, and they decide to work together to get through the day. Their relationship starts off rocky, but can anyone resist that George Clooney smile for long?

Pat and Mike (1952) – Katharine Hepburn is a promising female athlete, but her fiance always ends up distracting her. When she hires a sports promoter (Spencer Tracy) to assist her, the pair slowly develop an attraction to one another. But can their budding relationship weather an ill-tempered boxer and scores of mobsters?

The Heartbreak Kid (1972) – Voted by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 funniest films ever made, the film stars Charles Grodin as a Jewish sporting goods salesman who leaves his new bride to pursue a blonde coed (Cybill Shepherd) he meets on his honeymoon. Eddie Albert received an Oscar nomination for his role as Shepherd’s over-protective father.

Continental Divide (1981) – The last film made by actor/comedian John Belushi, Continental Divide casts him in the role of a big city newspaper reporter who heads into the Rockies after a story he was working on got him badly beaten by a pair of corrupt cops. There, he meets a spirited researched named Dr. Nell Porter (Blair Brown), and a romance slowly begins to simmer between the bickering duo.

The Courtship of Eddie’s Father (1963) – Glenn Ford plays a widower trying to raise young son Eddie (Ron Howard). Eddie wants his father to be happy, and so he’s always trying to fix him up with various women, with less than successful results. Shirley Jones and Stella Stevens co-star, and the film would inspire the television series starring Bill Bixby and Brandon Cruz.

That concludes my look at some excellent romantic comedy movies you may be unfamiliar with. There are plenty more where that came from, however, and modern-day filmmakers like Judd Apatow have certainly put their own stamp on the genre. So no matter what the era, you’re guaranteed to have plenty of rom com goodness to choose from.

When it come to dating a PUA or pick-up artist have an advantage over regular guys because they have the best pick up lines or openers that successfully get girls to establish a good conversation with with them. Many of this dating artist learn their tricks by following others that have great PUA openers skills. There are many online and offline resources like websites, blogs, books, videos, etc., where you can get some good advice. But, not many people think of what for me was the perfect place to look for some grade A lessons, the movies.

How many times have you watch a romantic comedy movies with your girlfriend, female, friend, or wife and see her get exited, happy, and sad in different parts of the film but you never took the time to pay attention and even take some notes of those scenes. Well, that’s exactly what I’ve done.

Before I put my little dating study in place I needed a list of what laddies consider the top funny romantic films of all times, after a little online research and some good reading I found the results of a survey made by Slate Magazine that was answer by over 13,800 women, and that exactly what I needed to start my case study, which lead me to figure out the great pick-up lines and openers lessons I share below.

First here is the result of the survey that asked, what movies in the past 25 years they think are the smartest romantic comedies they ever seen?

1. 1% voted for Baby Boom.
2. 1% voted for Next Stop Wonderland.

As you can see those are some very unusual films that most guys I know would it never guess, include me in that group.

After watching all the movies with my wife and sister I notice something very useful, that both of them had similar feelings about each emotional scene. Now, this doesn’t mean your PUA openers are going to work with every girl you meet, because another element I put close attention was the way the guys talk and the lines they used to get the girl on each of those films. Below I share my results, I hope you find it helpful.

Here are the tips and lessons I learned:

a. Make a list of open ended questions that women will love to answer.
b. Be sure that each question has more that one way to be answer.
c. Think of ways to add the funny element to your response.
d. Add social proof to your response by telling them you know someone close to you that had such experience.
e. Think of every single answer that might come to you, so you can be prepare.
f. And last make notes of each answer and write down a good response to each of them that use points ‘c’ and ‘d’, plus be sure that your responses encourage a dynamic conversation.
g. Always be confident about yourself.

I hope these PUA openers lessons will help you get the girls you like. Now put them into action.

Movies – Can “Romantic Comedy” Survive the 21st Century?

Romantic comedies survived WW2 and the 20th Century nicely, becoming the staple entertainment items of Hollywood’s “Golden Age.” Cary Grant alone has made enough romantic comedies to last us for a while… THE AWFUL TRUTH, HIS GIRL FRIDAY, HOLIDAY, THE GRASS IS GREENER, OPERATION PETTICOAT, THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, MY FAVORITE WIFE, HOUSEBOAT… the list goes on and on.

Starting in the late 50s and continuing through the 60s, we have the “Pillow Talk” genre of rom-coms. Who can forget the Doris Day – Rock Hudson magic? It was great while it lasted.

Zoom ahead to our day – what do we have? Has anyone watched a good romantic comedy since the monumental achievement of WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (1989) and SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE (1993), both written by Nora Ephron, and the latter also directed by the same?

YOU’VE GOT MAIL (1998) was one time too many Ephron tried to create the same “Sleepless” magic. As gifted a writer and director as she was, even Nora Ephron could not pull the rom-com rabbit out of her hat whenever she wanted. And I’m afraid it’s getting harder by the day.

How can we have true comedy, and especially romantic comedy, when the world seems to be exploding at the seams? With all these wars, international terrorism, global warming, nuclear proliferation, unheard of pandemics, who has the heart to celebrate the innocence of a romantic comedy?

One alternative is to recombine rom-com with other genres, like the rom-com-action-thriller experiment MR. AND MRS. SMITH (2005). I give that genre-saddling approach another ten years and then perhaps we may have to do with rom-com-horror and rom-com-sci-fi anomalies masquerading as the original thing.

Buckle your seatbelts, kids. Romantic comedy could be a rough ride in the years ahead.

A List of the Best Romantic Comedies of the Past Decade

It is not always easy for guys to sit through romantic comedies. A large portion of men consider this genre of movies to be pretty much unwatchable, and often are doing a favor to their significant other by sitting through it. But this does not always have to be the case. While many of these films are certainly catered to the female demographic, there are some good ones out there that can be watched and enjoyed by anybody.

This article will discuss some of the best romantic comedies from the past 10 years.

One movie that falls under the romantic comedy genre, but surely is anything but, is Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. Starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, this movie tackles a very interesting approach to the subject of breaking up, and is incredibly enjoyable.

If you are a fan of British comedian Ricky Gervais, then Ghost Town is worth checking out. If you have no idea who that is, then it is still worth seeing. This movie takes place in New York City and is a dry, yet humorous watch.

It goes without saying that The 40 Year Old Virgin should be on this list. Steve Carrell stars in his breakout role as a virgin, who is, as the title would suggest, 40 years old. Directed by the great Judd Apatow, this film is filled with laughs.

Any fan of Woody Allen films should check out Vicky Christina Barcelona. Woody Allen has always been exceptional at showcasing the cities in which his movies take place, and Vicky Christina Barcelona shows the beauty of the Spanish city brilliantly. It is truly amazing the range that Javier Bardem has showed recently.

In just a few months, he went from playing one of the most terrifying villains in cinematic history (Anton Sigur in the multiple Academy Award Winning film No Country For Old Men) to playing a seductive Spanish romantic in this film.

Finally, a great film to watch, either by yourself or with a significant other, is Juno. This movie is directed by Diablo Cody and stars Ellen Page in her breakout role as well as the awkwardly funny Michael Cera. This film is anything but cheesy, and every line from this movie is well written.

Hopefully you found one or more films on this list that you will consider next time you want to watch a romantic comedy.

3 Reason Why Romantic Comedies Rock

These days, it is no secret to movie lovers that romantic comedies are on the come back. In the last 10-15 years we have been blessed with numerous romantic comedies that are absolutely hysterical. You’ve got There’s Something About Mary, Along Came Polly, Meet The Parents, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, I Love You Man, Knocked Up, Jerry Maguire, The Wedding Singer, and many others. These are just a few off the top of my head!

Okay, we know that there are tons of great movies in this category. But why is it that a good romantic comedy rocks? Below I will give you 3 reason why quality romantic comedies rock:

1. Women Love Them – Yes, it is no secret that women love romance. And if you can add some humor to he equation it is even better! So if you are looking for something fun to do with the wife or girlfriend there is no doubt a quality romantic comedy will hit the right spot!

2. Men Enjoy Them – What? Men like movies involving romance? ABSOLUTELY! Most men can get past all of the lovey dovey romance if you can hit the comedy act dead on. These movies these days are delivering big time on the comedy part of these movies. And I think they have realized if you can do this, you double your target audience!

3. Great for the Whole Family – A good romantic comedy is perfect for a family gathering. Some do have some language issues that would need to be considered if children are around, but for the most part these movies a versatile movies, that adults and children can enjoy watching.

What other genre of movie can appeal to so many different types and age groups of people? General comedy movies for the most part are way to vulgar to involve kids, and woman don’t seem to enjoy them as much as most men. Strictly romance movies are pretty much off the radar for most men, so they are not really considered to be versatile. Forget about horror movies all together. Suspense movies can be great for both men and women, but are not particularly enjoyable for kids.

In the end, romantic comedies are the most versatile movie for everybody to enjoy. Whether you are planning a hot date, a quiet night with the significant other, or a family get together you cannot go wrong with one of these flicks.
