Romantic Comedies – Yes or No?

A guy meets a girl. After getting through some life obstacles together, they fall in love. The two separate, only to realize, that they are a perfect match. The guy and girl reunite, and they lived happily ever after.

This is the basic formula in romantic comedies. It has been told over and over again, endlessly recycled by the movie industry. Some variations in the storyline is made from time to time to keep the audience entertained. Sometimes, the variations were quite major, some of them crossed the border, and they were moved to the other genres. Few movies even created their own genres. But, is it really necessary that a movie must meet a certain standards so it could be categorized as a romantic comedy?

Everyone have their own criteria of what can be called a romantic comedy. Some thought, if it’s romantic and has its funny moments, then it is a rom-com. Others thought, if the core of the story is not the ‘boy meets girl’ scenario, then it is not.

Most of the times, we let the movie makers decide it for us. But, a romantic movie that can spark up a laugh is not always romantic comedy for them. For example, if someone thinks that Fight Club (1999) is a rom-com, can you accept it? Of course, when you’re thinking Project Mayhem, there’s really nothing romantic about it. What you can accept though, is the attraction between The Narrator (Edward Norton) and Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter). Watching skyscrapers tumbling one after another together is not exactly an ideal date, but there is clearly romance between them. And some people do think that the movie, and the weird relationship, is funny. After all, she met him at a very strange time in his life.

Romantic comedies could came in a lot of forms. They could even be hidden in movies we considered macho. There’s Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man (2002). There’s Han Solo and Princess Leia in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980). Or John Smith and Jane Smith in Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005). These movies are never considered romantic comedies, but we have to admit, without the chemistry between the couples, it will never be the movie we know today. It would be a lot less of it.

The key to identifying movies we could consider a romantic comedy, is to analyze the relationship between the couple. If the romance is only used to spice things up in a movie, then it’s probably not. If you could erase the whole romantic scene from the movie, and it makes no difference whatsoever, then the movie clearly has no talent for being one. But, if the romance portion of the movie defines the characters and supports the main storyline, then a rom-com might be lurking on your screen.

What we think about a movie, defines the movie. The movie makers might have a different opinion, but, they can’t force the audience to categorize a movie solely because they said so. Ultimately, it’s the audience who decides whether the movie they watched was a romantic comedy or not.

So, what can we do after getting a new definition of romantic comedies? Maybe we can incorporate this new set of rules in our everyday lives. And then, we can start a debate with our girlfriends and wives about which ‘romantic comedy’ movie we should watch on date night. It should be fun.

Animated Comedy Movies

Comedy movies have been around since film saw its beginnings, but the animated genre has gained popularity throughout recent years. Though animation is particularly popular with children, comedies geared at adult audiences have also been released in this spectacular format. It’s more commonly seen on the television networks (with animated adult comedy shows such as Family Guy and South Park) but it has been done on the big screen.

Which animated comedy movies should you watch? It depends what you are looking for. These family and mature audience films of the gene are a great place to start.

Animated Family Comedy Movies

The Madagascar Films (2005; 2008) – These films serve up adventure and plenty of laughs, with a cast of animal characters who suddenly find themselves in the wilds of Africa after only having known life within the sweet captivity of the Central Park Zoo. The characters are voiced by some of today’s best loved comedians including Chris Rock, Ben stiller and Sacha Baron Cohen. A third film is set to be released in 2012.

Monsters VS Aliens (2009) – Got a family full of sci-fi fans and of course, lovers of comedy movies? You’ll all enjoy this computer animated comedy about a woman who is struck by a meteorite on her wedding day, transformed into a giant, taken captive by a secret government compound and befriended by a group of strange but lovable monsters  who’ll join with her to combat aliens and save the world!

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009) – The beloved children’s book is brought to life by a hilarious cast and modern animation. Join Flint, the wanna-be inventor, who finally sees some short lived success as he falls for the girl, creates enough food to fill the bellies of everyone in town and later deals with the comical catastrophe that ensues!

Animated Comedy Movies

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988) – There’s trouble in Toontown in this classic favorite. Families with older children might consider this film for a family night pick. Some scenes may give younger children a fright. The film is a wonderful combination of comedy, mystery, fantasy and live action mixed with animation.

South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut (1999) – South Park took hold of its success and went the comedy movies route when it was brought to the big screen in 1999. As usual, fans’ favorite characters -Kyle, Stan, Cartman and friends- are in the midst of comical adventure, with no shortage of foul language and extremely crude humor.

Eight Crazy Nights (2002) – If you’re an Adam Sandler fan (and of his more adult films) you may enjoy watching him dish out the laughs (and plenty of song, those this isn’t your typical musical number) in full cartoon style animation.

Best Romantic Comedies

Who does not like romantic comedies? After all, they are fun and light-hearted, and provide a good laugh or cry, as well as lots of romance. In romantic comedies, passion, love and romance become the central theme of the plot, while humor also plays an integral part in the background of the storyline. With the perfect blend of romance and humor, romantic comedy films have grown to be a popular means of total entertainment. And they are not only fun movies but also perfect for romantic dates. This is why they are so popular among teens, young adults, and couples of all ages.

There are so many good romantic comedy movies, that it’s quite to difficult to name all of them here. However, there are a few romantic comedies which we cannot ignore as they have not lost their charm, beauty and greatness over time.

One that comes into my mind is a classic romance movie called “City Lights”. Directed by the famous Charlie Chaplin, and in the year of 1931, it’s considered to be one of the greatest romantic movies of all time. This is one of the most beloved and most adored of all the Chaplin movies. It is the story of a poor tramp, played by Charlie Chaplin and a beautiful flower girl, played by Virginia Cherrill, who is blind and makes her living selling flowers on the street. The movie is an example of selfless and innocent love where the poor tramp goes through a series of hurdles, and circumstance so that he can bring her sight back.

He is not a rich man outside, but inside he is an emperor willing to make all the sacrifices for a girl who has never seen him and has mistaken him for a rich man. But the movie is not only about sacrifice, there is a perfect blending of pure love, selfless acts from these two lovers, and enough humor to keep the audience entertained. “City Lights” is definitely the greatest example of a wonderfully entertaining movie and one of the best romance movies ever to be made for the silver screen. “City Lights” is a simple, pure drama of selfless love and pure romance, while in the meantime being incredibly funny. Hence it is well-remembered today and hailed as one of the greatest classic romance movies of all time.

Well, “City Lights” is one of the top on the list, but there are hundreds of other great romantic comedies, and they are all unique, funny and entertaining in their own way. For example, let’s talk about “Splash”. Made in the year 1984 and directed by Ron Howard, “Splash” stars Tom Hanks and Darryl Hannah. “Splash” is a fantasy, romantic comedy of two individuals, one is human and the other is a mermaid. The movie is sheer entertainment, and in the meantime providing viewers great relief from their day to day worried lives, allowing them to escape into a world of fantasy and romance.

We also cannot forget about “Roman Holiday”, another enduring classic romantic comedy movie from 1953. This movie features a young Audrey Hepburn and the dashing Gregory Peck, directed by William Wyler. It’s a wonderful love story between a runaway princess and the reporter who initially wants to get the inside scoop of her life, but they each end up falling in love with each other.

Here are some other best classic comedy romance movies that are very popular, well-known and recommended: It Happened One Night, Sleepless in Seattle, The Princess Bride, Annie Hall, My Best Friend’s Wedding and Romancing the Stone, When Harry Met Sally, and Pretty Woman.

Popular Movie Genre – Romantic Comedy

The romantic comedy has slowly evolved into a more formidable opponent to all of the other film genres present in the modern entertainment world. Though the romantic comedy is a genre unto itself, that does not downplay the fact that there are many subsets, some successful, some not, in this category. Romantic comedies have been a hit among many studios, mainly because of their ability to be produced at relatively low costs, a trait that studio moguls love, especially when their comedy has a good weekend at the box office. Another reason that many executives love the idea of the romantic comedy is that the movies do not have to have all that successful of a box office reign to bring in a well-sized profit. It is no secret that action films are the highest takers in the box office harvest, with the comedy and drama genres not far behind. This may seem like a rather precarious position for the romantic comedy, but the truth of the matter is that the industry knows exactly what to count on when releasing such films.

The advent of the DVD is another great reason why the romantic comedy thrives and will continue to be produced. Many romantic comedies do not do well at the box office, especially in the eyes of the masses, but a romantic comedy’s path to success highly differs from that of a high-budget action movie. A romantic comedy can have a rather modest showing at the box office, a good showing with DVD sales, and then be touted as a success by the industry, which may not be a good thing for some entertainment critics, who oftentimes don’t give any romantic comedies a chance, but they should, especially since the genre is only growing.

Movies released in today’s market often have a genre overlap, which has produced many comedy/romantic comedy hits in the modern era. Films like “The Break-Up”, “Wedding Crashers”, “The Girl Next Door”, along with many others, are considered by some to be romantic comedies, not in the traditional sense, but in the sense that studios want the public to see. “Bridget Jones’ Diary” was a huge success as a romantic comedy, but it is in a different subset of the romantic comedy category, which is fine to the public, as well as the industry, because this only means that more people can be reached by the different kinds of romantic comedies that are consistently being made.

Marketing is not a modern concept, but it is put to good use when advertising for today’s romantic comedies. Many of these movies are meant for women, some are meant for men, while there are some films located in the abyss of in between, but most of them have their set audience. The ability of the studios to attract both sexes to the studio is not due to the makeup of the movie itself, but is instead reliant on the marketing campaigns that are enlisted for the films. Many women can tell the difference between a comedy and a romantic comedy, but some can’t, and it is that section of the population that the industry focuses on, especially with some of the higher-budget movies, which cannot be successful without some form of genre transcendence.

The romantic comedy is a viable art form, and is available to the public in a variety of styles, all of which may sometimes overlap each other. Many of these movies are made in the manner of exploring artistic vision, while some are made because of the relatively failsafe method of production. The traditional romantic comedy still thrives on its system of artistic expression, along with the ability to connect with many females, and some males, but the genre of the romantic comedy is changing. The traditional romantic comedies will not be forced into extinction, but those wishing to view a more traditional version of the genre must know what to look out for, especially when there are invaders afoot.
